 SANTA CLARA COLLECTION

Socially and economically, this craft plays a very important part in the lives of the Santa Clara Natives.

Potters would regularly gather to model, slip, carve and paint together as a group, especially prior to an Indian Art Fair. The artists feel an obligation to assist eachother in exchange for clay and sand and in order to be unselfish and cooperative.

Over many years Indian potters have learned and perfected the production of their beautiful wares. Attempts have been made to reproduce such works today, however, commercial clay must be altered drastically and ceremaic kilns do not produce the carbon for smothering which is a vital technique in replicating the results of Indian blackware, thus copies are very easily detected.

Santa Clara potters through the generations, since the famous Maria Martinez, take great pride in their original works, conforming to the traditional rules of, technique, carving depth, pattern, symmetry and a smooth even exterior and exterior finish after polishing.

Available - Original Black Santa Clara Handcrafted pots, bowls and figures, a 15 piece collection, Prices per piece range from $150.00 - $600.00 (pictured above)

MARY SMALL COLLECTABLES

Highly esteemed artist Mary Small of Jemez Pueblo, New Mexico.

Mary mastered her ancestors traditional coiling technique of pottery using clay dug from the Jemez land. Each piece is hand painted with clay glazes including her distinctive matte grey which her and her husband (Ivan Clay) created. After every detailed glaze application the pieces would then be fired outdoors over cotton wood coals.

Around the late 70's and early 80's Mary's distinctive designs, along with her excellent quality put Jemez pottery on the map. It has since been saught after by collectors and ensuiasts from all across the world.

"Each piece of pottery is a contribution to the interaction with nature so necessary for protection of the people on earth." Mary Small
